Cari amici e amiche,

oggi vi presentiamo il video e qualche foto di backstage riguardanti Chiinga,
artista di Livingstone che ha realizzato un bellissimo quadro per la nostra Guest-house.

La sua idea di arte è strettamente connessa con la salvguardia della natura e questo messaggio di rappacificazione si può leggere nel quadro, in cui è forte il contrasto fra l'idea umana di progresso (reso molto bene dalle pennellate rosse e blu e bianche) e il verde di tutto ciò che è "naturale".
Seminascoste nell'ordito verde-rosso, fanno capolino alcune figure umane che il pittore ha voluto come presenze a rappresentare il dialogo incessante fra uomo e natura.
Per alleviare le ferite inferte, seminare prospettive nuove di arte e civiltà.

Con questo post cogliamo l'occasione per augurarvi un sereno Natale.

Ciao!

Vi presentiamo oggi il primo di una serie di video sugli artisti vincitori del contest "9 stanze in cerca d'autore".
Da un anno circa, grazie al sostegno della Fondazione Cariplo e al team di volontari che collabora con noi, stiamo lavorando per arredare ogni  stanza della nostra nuova Guest-house con un dipinto diverso, ispirato al tema del "mito".

La prima ad aprire questa serie di episodi, è oggi Theresa Bwalya, giovane pittrice di Livingstone.
Il suo quadro, "Ifyoni fya mikoshi", un'espressione della lingua bemba che significa "uccelli dai lunghi colli" vede protagonisti dei bellissimi struzzi che chiacchierano usando il lungo collo come un telefono. Il fondo giallo del quadro, fa emergere le sagome degli animali con energia, regalando alla stanza luce e calore.

La tela è dedicata dall'autrice a tutte le donne.

Hi everybody!
We present today the first videos about the artists who won the contest "9 rooms in search of an author" by Olga's Italian Corner's Guest-house. The general theme was "Novels, legends and Myths of Zambia". The theme has been chosen by a committee which includes officers of CeLIM, CeLIM aid-workers and Olga's supporters and friends.

Today we talk about Theresa Bwalya, who created for us "Ifyoni fya mikoshi" a bemba expression which means: "Birds with long necks" inspired by the beautiful ostriches who are all over the big canvas. They seem to communicate each other on the beautiful yellow background.
Theresa is a young painter of Livingstone and if you watch the video, you can appreciate her syle even more.

2012/09/06: OPENING OF THE NEW OLGA'S GUEST-HOUSE!

Ciao a tutti!
Siamo molto felici e orgogliosi di annunciare l'apertura della nostra nuova Guest-house, in pieno centro a Livingstone, nello stesso complesso della nostra Pizzeria-Ristorante.
Mettiamo qui qualche foto della festa d'inaugurazione.
Ricordiamo che la nostra non è una comune Pizzeria-Guest-house, ma dà lavoro a tanti ragazzi che hanno studiato al YCTC, una scuola di formazione per ragazzi in difficoltà di Livingstone.

Ringraziamo tutti gli ospiti e gli amici presenti giovedì 6 Settembre e tutte le persone che avrebbero voluto esserci.
In particolare: il Deputy Permanent Secretary della Provincia del Sud in rappresentanza del Ministro del Turismo, Alfred Chingi, l’ambasciatore italiano in Zambia, Pier Mario Daccò, il Vescovo di Livingstone, Raymond Mpezele, la professoressa della Facoltà di Architettura del Politecnico di Milano, Lidia Diappi, il Presidente di CeLIM, prof. Matteo Crovetto e la Fondazione Cariplo.
Presenti anche tanti amici e volontari che, chi da anni chi da qualche mese, contribuiscono a portare avanti le attività di CeLIM in Zambia e che non hanno voluto mancare i festeggiamenti per l’inizio di questa nuova avventura.

Hello everyone!

We are very happy and proud to announce the opening of our new Guest-house in the center of Livingstone, in the same complex of our Pizzeria-Restaurant.

We have here some pictures of the opening ceremony.

 We remember you that we are not a common Pizzeria-Guest-house, but we're employing many young people who have studied at YCTC, a training school for disadvantaged children in Livingstone.

We thank all our guests, friends and volunteers.

In particular the guests who were present last Thursday: the Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Province of South representing the Minister for Tourism, Alfred Chingi, the Italian ambassador in Zambia, Pier Mario Daccò, the Bishop of Livingstone, Raymond Mpezele, Professor of the Faculty of Architecture of the Polytechnic of Milan Lidia Diappi, the President of CeLIM, prof. Matteo Crovetto and Cariplo Foundation.

Nato nel 1964 a Cassino (FR), Gian Luca Brunetti è ricercatore di Tecnologia dell'Architettura presso il Politecnico di Milano, Facoltà di Architettura e Società.

Grazie a un progetto finanziato dalla Fondazione Cariplo, l’arch. Brunetti è venuto a tenere un corso di una decina di giorni ai ragazzi della classe di muratura, al Youth Community Training Centre, la scuola legata a doppio filo ad Olga’s che offre a tanti ragazzi di Livingstone dei corsi pratici e teorici come sartoria, cucina, idraulica…

L’arch. Brunetti è una persona affabile e interessata ai sistemi di costruzione, sperimentali e a basso costo.

Durante la nostra conversazione, Gian Luca spiega come un punto centrale della sua ricerca sia l’autocostruzione a basso costo, interpretata secondo un’impostazione che getta le sue radici nei sogni dell’architettura USA degli anni ’60 e ’70 (che sono anche gli anni durante i quali ha iniziato a risvegliarsi un intenso interesse per l’architettura solare e per il rapporto tra architettura e ambiente).

L’architetto illustra il suo punto di vista, secondo il quale, in paesi come lo Zambia, che stanno cercando una propria via per lo sviluppo, oggi ancora spesso si tenda a costruire usando nuovi materiali e componenti in una maniera che è ancora però legata alle procedure proprie delle tecniche rassicuranti perchè ben conosciute.

L’esempio più tipico è quello del tetto in lamiera costruito come un tetto in paglia.
Con il risultato di ottenere condizioni ambientali di minor comfort.

L’architetto sostiene che quello che gli sta a cuore è una sostenibilità profonda, che tenga d’occhio le nuove tecnologie e nello stesso tempo interpreti la vocazione – e sfrutti le possibilità – dei materiali e componenti “poveri” che si possono trovare qui.

Al YCTC l’architetto, tra le altre cose, ha insegnato ai ragazzi a costruire tegoloni in ferrocemento per coperture, che hanno il vantaggio di abbattere i costi rispetto alle coperture ordinarie.

In questo modo l’arch. Brunetti ha portato una ventata di innovazione che gli studenti del YCTC sembrano aver accolto con entusiasmo. Grazie mille!

Born in 1964 in Cassino (FR), Professor Gian Luca Brunetti, is a PhD researcher in Architectural Technology at the Polytechinc of Milan, Faculty of Architecture and Society.

He came here to Livingstone with a project sponsored by Fondazione Cariplo, running a workshop for bricklaying students, of the Youth Community Training Center. This centre is a place where many boys and girls of Livingstone can attend many series practical and theorical courses such as tailoring, catering, plumbing…

The school is legally registred under the Minister of Education.

Architect Brunetti is an affable person with a genuine interest in teaching experimental, low-cost new building systems. 
 At the core of his research there is the concept of “self-construction”, which has its roots in the architectural dreams of the 60s and 70s, when a true interest in relations between environment and architecture was re-born.

Nowadays in Zambia, which is looking for a personal way to development, you usually find buildings realized with new materials and components, but at the same time they are using old techniques, which were generated according with old materials and circumstances.

A typical example is that of roof built with profiled metal sheets as they were thatched roof. With the result to obtain much less satisfactory thermal performances.

Then Gian Luca told us that his purpose is to achieve deep sustainability, which should take into account the true vocation and potential of new materials, to fully exploit it.

The students of the bricklaying class are very happy to have the possibility of learning how to build fantastic ferrocement tiles as an affordable alternative to the ordinary reinforced concrete roofs. 

In this way, arch. Brunetti has brought a wave of innovation to YCTC students and they seem to have welcomed it with entusiasm. Thanks a lot!

PIZZA SANDWICH!

Oggi siamo in cucina con Martha, Talent, Isaac e Purity.

I nostri cuochi sono impegnati a preparare una delle più gettonate specialità di Olga’s: il pizza sandwich.

Isaac e Purity hanno già preparato la pasta della pizza che ha reso famoso Olga’s e gli danno la forma di un sandwich. Isaac va su e giù dalla cucina al forno dove fin dal mattino sta bruciando la legna: tempo 10 minuti e il pane è pronto

Si resta incantati davanti alla bellezza del nostro forno a legna!

Ma…chi ci chiama dalla cucina?

E’ Martha che ha già preparato gli ingredienti per il sandwich con la frittata: insalata, pomodoro cipolle e ovviamente la fantastica frittata fatta con due uova freschissime!

Nel frattempo Talent si è dato da fare con il ripieno del pizza sandwih alle verdure: una zucchina, mezza melanzana e un peperone verde grigliati e uniti alla nostra succulenta mozzarella! YUM!

Adesso non resta che gustarci questa deliziosa e originale rielaborazione della nostra italianissima pizza! Buon appetito!

Today we are in the kitchen with Martha, Talent, Isaac, and Purity.
Our chefs are busy preparing one of the most popular specialties of Olga's: the pizza sandwiches.

TITLE:  THE LEGEND OF NYAMI-NYAMI

DESCRIBTION:  Nyami-Nyami is a legendary creature believed in by the Tonga people. It is a dragon like creature with a snake’s body and the head of a fish. Nyami-Nyamii-Nyami is said to reside in Zambezi River and controls the life in and -on the river. Nyami-Nyami and his wife used to reside in the Kariba George as god and goodness of the under World. During the building of the Kariba Dam. It is believed that he become separated with his wife by the wall built across the river. Therefore, he become angry and fled into the Victoria Falls. His anger resulted in unusual disasters of flooding which resulted in deaths of workers during construction of the dam. The Tonga elders had to assist by offering a sacrifice to appease the wrath of Nyami-Nyami. Today everyone who does banji-jumping , kayaking, rafting and other water activities is advice to wear a Nyami-Nyami carving on the neck for good luck. The Tonga believe that he will break the dam wall one day and reunite with his wife.

DESCRIBTION:  One stringed Zambia instrument played by young men when announcing courtship or men social occasions. Kalumbu is made of a bow and guard. Strings were originally made of tree bark. Now they may be made of tree wire or nylon.

TITLE:  THE HONEY BADGER AND THE HONEYGUIDE

DESCRIBTION:  The Honey badger is a fearless little animal found throughout most of Africa. One of the most well know about this animal is its relationship with a small bird called the honeyguide. It is believed that the bird, which likes beeswax and bee larvae, needs the badger to help open bee hives. So it gets the attention of the honey badger by making twittering noises and flying from tree to tree to guide it to a bee hive. Since the honey badger also likes the products of bee hives, it willing follows. When the hive is reached, the bird patiently waits for the honey badger to break open the hive. The badger feeds on the honey and bee larvae and then leaves some for the bird which then flies in and feeds on the remaining larvae and beeswax. The myth goes on to say that if the badger does not leave any food for the bird, the next time it may gets its revenge by leading the badger to a lion or a snake.

During this period elderly women instruct and coach the initiate in all her feminine and social duties.
