This year YCTC
students were given the chance to receive both theoretical and practical
training on renewable energy. Tomaso Amati and Giorgio Bonamini, both engineers
at “Ingegneria senza frontiere-MI”
(Engineers without borders), on behalf of Politecnico di Milano, have held a
six-day course on sustainable energy and environmental impact. Respecting the practice-based teaching style of
YCTC (the school’s motto is ‘Learning by doing’) the teachers proposed the
realisation of a do-it-yourself solar panel.
After a
general introduction supplying information on energy issues and the sustainable
use of renewable energy by means of technologies which are suited to and can be
reproduced in Zambia, the construction of a solar panel was proposed.
The
students were then allowed to gain practical experience on one of the
technologies proposed by the teachers with an immediate review of the knowledge
they had just learnt.
