DESCRIBTION: Elephants are gathered and seeking peace with humanity. In front of them lying dead is the elephant. One on top of the elephant are vultures. One vulture carrying an elephant task. Far side is the rainbow, representing the cry for peace in the elephant world, on the other side is a bird sited on a tree watching silently.

TITLE: THE LEGEND OF NYAMI-NYAMI

DESCRIBTION: Nyami-Nyami is a legendary creature believed in by the Tonga people. It is a dragon like creature with a snake’s body and the head of a fish. Nyami-Nyamii-Nyami is said to reside in Zambezi River and controls the life in and -on the river. Nyami-Nyami and his wife used to reside in the Kariba George as god and goodness of the under World. During the building of the Kariba Dam. It is believed that he become separated with his wife by the wall built across the river. Therefore, he become angry and fled into the Victoria Falls. His anger resulted in unusual disasters of flooding which resulted in deaths of workers during construction of the dam. The Tonga elders had to assist by offering a sacrifice to appease the wrath of Nyami-Nyami. Today everyone who does banji-jumping , kayaking, rafting and other water activities is advice to wear a Nyami-Nyami carving on the neck for good luck. The Tonga believe that he will break the dam wall one day and reunite with his wife.

DESCRIBTION: One stringed Zambia instrument played by young men when announcing courtship or men social occasions. Kalumbu is made of a bow and guard. Strings were originally made of tree bark. Now they may be made of tree wire or nylon.

TITLE: THE HONEY BADGER AND THE HONEYGUIDE

DESCRIBTION: The Honey badger is a fearless little animal found throughout most of Africa. One of the most well know about this animal is its relationship with a small bird called the honeyguide. It is believed that the bird, which likes beeswax and bee larvae, needs the badger to help open bee hives. So it gets the attention of the honey badger by making twittering noises and flying from tree to tree to guide it to a bee hive. Since the honey badger also likes the products of bee hives, it willing follows. When the hive is reached, the bird patiently waits for the honey badger to break open the hive. The badger feeds on the honey and bee larvae and then leaves some for the bird which then flies in and feeds on the remaining larvae and beeswax. The myth goes on to say that if the badger does not leave any food for the bird, the next time it may gets its revenge by leading the badger to a lion or a snake.

TITLE: INITIATION OF GIRLS

DESCRIBTION: The initiation of girls has different names in different tribes. In Bemba it is called GHISUNGU, SIKENGE in Lozi, CHINAMWALI in Chewa, NKALOLU in Tonga. LITUNGU in Luvale, KISUNGU in Kaonde and KUTEMBWISHA KU NKUNKA in Lunda. The girl is secluded and confined in an initiation hut for a period of about three months. During this period elderly women instruct and coach the initiate in all her feminine and social duties.

NEW MOSES SIYANGA OVEN

At Olga’s we have a new oven, it was named after the man who built it: “New Moses Siyanga Oven”. Moses is one of the members of Olga’s Staff, is a watchman. He worked under the supervision of Licia Gaia Sortino, the architect who is in charge of the new accommodation building, and the Chief Executive, Giuseppe. The construction of the oven took more or less one month, this was due to some materials which were imported within Zambia and some, like the fire bricks and the properly cement, from Italy. Shortly the oven has been lighten and be ready to use.

Abbiamo un nuovo forno ad Olga’s. E’ stato intitolato a Moses il guardiano di Olga’s che lo ha costruito sotto la supervisione di Licia Gaia Sortino, l’architetto venuto dall’Italia per supervisionare la direzione dei lavori per la nuova guest house e il capo progetto, Giuseppe: “New Moses Siyanga Oven”. Per la costruzione c’è voluto, più o meno, un mese perché si è dovuto attendere anche qualche materiale proveniente dall’Italia come i mattoni refrattari e la malta refrattaria. Piano piano adesso cominceremo ad accenderlo e presto sarà pronto per sfornare le ottime pizze di Gerard e Talent, i nostri pizza chefs!

Special lesson for th catering students. One week after completion of courses Mrs. Nyerere, who teaches the course of catering, has organized a lesson in Italian cooking for her 22 students. Here's the menu: lasagne alla bolognese, farfalle al pomodoro e salame di cioccolato. The class, curious about the preparations, has learned to work and create fresh pasta, as well as sheets for lasagne, handmade farfalle. For sauces, some students are passionate about the lengthy preparation of the meat sauce and fresh tomato sauce. The unusual preparation of sweet, unusual for students who are accustomed to baking in the oven, has wowed all the guys! He concluded the different preparations, all students are seated at the table and, as in the great Italian families, they ate all together the dishes prepared. At the end of the meal came the salame di cioccolato ... and everyone licked his fingers!

Lezione speciale per i ragazzi del corso di catering. Ad una settimana dalla chiusura dei corsi Mrs Nyerenda, docente del corso di catering, ha organizzato una lezione di cucina italiana per i suoi 22 studenti. Ecco il menu: lasagne alla bolognese, farfalle al pomodoro e salame di cioccolato. I ragazzi, incuriositi dalle preparazioni, hanno imparato a lavorare la pasta fresca e a creare, oltre alle sfoglie per le lasagne, le farfalle fatte a mano. Per i sughi, alcuni studenti si sono appassionati nella lunga preparazione del ragù di carne e del sugo di pomodoro fresco. L’insolita preparazione del dolce, insolita per gli studenti che sono abituati a preparare dolci al forno, ha lasciato a bocca aperta tutti i ragazzi! Concluse le diverse preparazioni, tutti gli studenti si sono seduti a tavola e, come nelle grandi famiglie italiane, hanno mangiato tutti insieme i piatti preparati. Alla fine del pasto è arrivato il salame al cioccolato...e tutti si sono leccati le dita!

(ENGLISH) Olga's - The Italian Corner is pleased to invite all artists or painting enthusiasts residing Livingstone or in general in Zambia, provided they are Zambian by nationality to the call "Nine Rooms in Search of an Author". The aim of the call is to find nine artists that will paint and personalize the interior of the nine rooms that are being built for the new Olga’s Guest House. Below the “Call for Selection”:

NINE ROOMS IN SEARCH OF AN AUTHOR

PROMOTORS AND PURPOSE OF THE CALL FOR SELECTION

On the occasion of the construction of the new Guest House the Italian restaurant Olga’s – The Italian Corner is announcing ‘Nine Rooms in Search of an Author’, a call for selection aimed at identifying the nine artists who will be able to personalize the nine new rooms of the Guest House. The general theme is “Novels, Legends and Myths of Zambia”. The theme has been chosen by a committee which will include officers of CeLIM, the Italian NGO behind Olga’s Project, CeLIM aid-workers and Olga’s supporters/friends. The same committee, listed here following, will evaluate and select the best realizations. The winners will realize the winning score in one of the rooms of the Guest House. To all the participants will also be given the opportunity to exhibit the work they have prepared for the competition during an exhibition which will be organized inside the restaurant and will take place from the 21th December 2011 until the day of the awards ceremony. As well as the chance to co-operate with Olga’s in any future exhibition which may be held within the restaurant.

PRIZE
The nine artists that will be selected will be given a prize of 750,000 Kwacha. All the expenses for the realization of the project will be covered by Olga’s up to a maximum of 300,000 Kwacha for each room. In each room, next to each painting, there will always be visible the name of the artist with his/her little biography and a description of the meaning of the work/paint.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS
Registration is free and open to all artists or painting enthusiasts residing Livingstone or in general in Zambia, provided they are Zambian by nationality. There are no further exclusion criteria. This should guarantee that the works exhibited in the new rooms belong to local cultural history, one of the aims of this competition being the enhancement of local culture, and that the competition is open to as many people as possible and not only to artists who are already well-known in the area.

APPLICATION PROCESS
Registration to the competition is completely free.
In order to apply for participation artists must bring directly to our offices:

- Copy of these rules duly signed;

-              The registration form duly filled in and signed;
-              The ‘artist’s dossier’ which should include: a short biography of the artist, information material on past exhibitions;
-              The sketch of the work the artist intends to present to the committee for assessment.
All the documents and the rules are freely downloadable from Olga’s website (www.olgasproject.com) or available at Olga’s – The Italian Corner. The ‘Artist’s dossier’ must be typed and handed in in file. Should a participant not have the means necessary to draw up said document, Olga’s – The Italian Corner, mainly in the person of Richard Sonsino (richard.sonsino@celim.org.zm), will offer complete availability and give time to help. Olga’s is not liable for any expenses incurred by the artists for the preparation of the sketch of the work to be presented for selection and any shipping or transport costs paid by the artists to deliver the material requested for application. The registration form and all the documents have to be handed in by the 19th of December at 12.00. After that there will be an exhibition of all the sketches received, from the 21st of December to the day of the awarding ceremony.

SELECTION SKETCH
The work that will be realized into each room will have these measurements: 2,5 meters wide and 1 meter high (see attached D_001). It will be realized on an interior wall finish to plaster. There might be used water colors or acrylic washable and durable. Different materials collages are forbidden.
The work to be presented to the committee for selection and subsequently exhibited during the competition exhibition must be 75 cm wide and 25 cm high. The work must comply with the specifications given by the committee; failure to do that will result in the artist being excluded from the competition:
- compliance with the theme assigned
- moral integrity and no element which may in any way cause offence
- not recreate somebody else’s work
- not need expensive materials or somebody else’s elaborations
- fit the required measurements

OWNERSHIP OF THE SKETCHES
Olga’s cannot be held in any way responsible for the works delivered by the artists and will never own said works. The sketches delivered by the artists for selection purposes shall remain the property of their authors who can reclaim their property after the selection and exhibition stages, but in three months after the conclusion of the initiative (1st July 2012). After that day, all the sketches could be alienated or destroyed. After some time Olga’s might think of dedicate part of the walls of the restaurant to promote the selling of the sketches presented during the selection stage. That decision will be taken after an adequate selection done by the responsible of the project, provided the artists agree.

SELECTION
The selection committee consisting will examine all applications for admission duly filled in and complete with all required material which are sent or delivered to our office by the deadline (19th December 2011 at 12.00) and will then choose the winners of the “Nine Rooms in Search of an Author” competition, which will take place by the end of February 2012.
All the works will be evaluate following these selection criteria (maximum score 110):
- aesthetic quality and maturity level of the idea (max 30)
- compliance with the theme assigned (max 30)
- originality and innovation among the artistic and cultural local tradition (max 20)
- possibility of realization, as regards to the budget (max 20)
- compliance with the themes of the other rooms and with the design of the furniture (max 10)

CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS
The artists will be invited to every event which will be held in connection with the competition by means of printed communications which will be displayed in the restaurant and possibly, subject to the participants’ authorisation, by text messages or e-mail.

APPOINTMENT OF WINNERS
The committee will meet and evaluate the sketches received and will chose the nine winner artists and paintings. The artists will be convened, in due course, for the press conference and the awards ceremony. After one week from the day of the awarding ceremony, the realization of the paintings
inside the rooms will start. The works must be completed within 3 weeks.

PROMOTORI E FINALITA’ DEL BANDO DI SELEZIONE
Il ristorante italiano Olga’s – The Italian Corner, in occasione della nuova costruzione della Guest House, presenta il bando di selezione “Nine Rooms in Search of an Author” finalizzato ad individuare i nove artisti, che potranno personalizzare con una propria opera pittorica, una delle nove nuove stanze della Guest House. Il tema generale è “Novels, Legends and Myths of Zambia”. Il tema è stato scelto da una commissione composta da responsabili e cooperanti CeLIM, la NGO italiana del progetto Olga’s, da responsabili del Politecnico di Milano, da donatori e amici di Olga’s. La stessa Commissione, sotto elencata, valuterà anche i progetti migliori. I vincitori realizzeranno l’opera premiata in una delle camere della Guest House. A tutti i partecipanti alla competizione verrà data la possibilità di esporre l’opera presentata al concorso durante una mostra all’interno degli spazi del ristorante, dal 21 dicembre 2011 fino alla cerimonia di premiazione delle opere vincitrici. Oltre alla possibilità di prolungare la collaborazione con Olga’s per eventuali future esposizioni all’interno degli spazi del ristorante.

PREMIO
Il premio consiste nella somma di 750.000 Kwacha per ciascuno dei nove artisti vincitori e nel rimborso spese per la realizzazione dell’opera fino ad un massimo di 300.000 Kwacha per ognuna delle nove stanze. In ogni stanza, accanto ad ogni dipinto, sarà sempre visibile una descrizione dell’artista e del significato dell’opera.

REQUISITI PER LA SELEZIONE
Il bando prevede l’iscrizione libera aperta a tutti gli artisti o appassionati di pittura residenti in Livingstone o su tutto il territorio zambiano ed obbligatoriamente di nazionalità zambiana. Non esistono ulteriori criteri di esclusione. Questo per garantire che all’interno delle nuove stanze possano essere presenti opere che appartengono alla storia della cultura locale, che tale concorso intende valorizzare, e per permettere la partecipazione al bando per il maggior numero possibile di persone e non solo ad artisti già riconosciuti e affermati della zona.

DOMANDA DI PARTECIPAZIONE
L’iscrizione al concorso è completamente gratuita. Per partecipare gli artisti devono portare direttamente presso i nostri uffici:

-              Il “dossier d’artista” che deve comprendere: una breve biografia dell’artista; il materiale informativo sulle mostre ed esposizioni precedenti (max 10 pagine);
-              La bozza dell’opera da sottoporre alla commissione per la valutazione;
I moduli ed il regolamento sono scaricabili dal sito internet di Olga’s (www.olgasproject.com) o disponibili presso Olga’s – The Italian Corner. Il “Dossier D’Artista” dovrà invece essere prodotto dall’artista in formato elettronico (file). Olga’s – The Italian Corner, principalmente nella figura di Richard Sonsino (richard.sonsino@celim.org.zm), offre la più completa disponibilità nel dedicare il proprio tempo per aiutare il partecipante durante la stesura computerizzata nel caso il partecipante stesso non disponga dei mezzi necessari alla realizzazione di tale documento. Olga’s non si fa carico delle spese sostenute dagli artisti per la realizzazione della bozza dell’opera da presentare per la selezione e delle eventuali spese di trasporto sostenute dagli artisti per consegnare il materiale necessario all’iscrizione. La domanda di iscrizione e tutti gli allegati devono essere consegnati tassativamente entro le ore 12:00 del 19 dicembre 2012. Seguirà una mostra di tutti i bozzetti pervenuti, dal 21 dicembre 2011 al giorno della cerimonia di premiazione delle opere vincitrici.

REALIZZAZIONE DEL BOZZETTO DI SELEZIONE
L’opera da realizzare nella camera avrà la dimensione massima di 2,50 m di larghezza e 1 m di altezza (vedi allegati D_001 e D_002). Verrà eseguita su una parete libera finita ad intonaco civile. Potranno essere impiegati colori ad acqua lavabili o acrilici e di lunga durata. Non sono ammessi collage di materiali. Il bozzetto dovrà avere le dimensioni di 75 cm di larghezza x 25 cm di altezza. Tale opera dovrà rispettare tutte le impostazioni date dalla commissione, in caso contrario seguirà l’esclusione dell’artista dalla competizione:
- essere pertinente con il tema assegnato;
- non offendere la sensibilità delle persone su i temi della morale, della religione, dell’etnia o della cultura in genere;
- non riprodurre opere d’arte già esistenti;
- non richiedere materiali costosi o lavorazioni di terzi;
- avere le dimensioni richieste;

PROPRIETA’ DEL BOZZETTO
Olga’s non sarà in alcun modo responsabile dei bozzetti consegnati dagli artisti e non risulterà mai proprietaria degli stessi. I bozzetti consegnati dagli artisti per la selezione resteranno dei singoli artisti che, terminata la fase di selezione e di esposizione prevista, potranno reclamarne la restituzione entro tre mesi dalla conclusione del concorso (1 luglio 2012), trascorsi i quali le opere potranno essere alienate o distrutte. In seguito potrebbe essere presa in considerazione da Olga’s – The Italian Corner la decisione di dedicare una parte delle pareti interne della hall del ristorante per promuovere la vendita dei bozzetti presentati nella fase di selezione. A tale decisione si giungerà a seguito di una valutazione adeguata da parte dei responsabili del progetto e del consenso stesso degli artisti.

SELEZIONE
Tutte le domande di ammissione, correttamente compilate e provviste di tutto il materiale richiesto, inviate o consegnate ai nostri uffici, e pervenute entro la scadenza fissata (ore 12:00 del 19 dicembre 2011), saranno visionate dalla commissione sopra indicata che a suo insindacabile giudizio sceglierà i vincitori del bando “Nine Rooms in Search of an Autor” in data da stabilirsi ma entro e non oltre il mese di febbraio 2012.
Le opere verranno giudicate applicando i seguenti criteri di valutazione (punteggio massimo 110):
- qualità estetica e grado di maturità dell’idea (max 30 punti)
- coerenza con il tema assegnato (max 30 punti)
- originalità ed innovazione all’interno della tradizione artistico-culturale locale (max 20 punti)
- fattibilità realizzativa in base al budget prestabilito (max 20 punti)
- coerenza rispetto ai temi delle altre stanze e dell’arredamento/design del resto della stanza (max 10 punti)

CHIAMATA DEI PARECIPANTI
Gli artisti verranno invitati ad ogni evento riguardante il concorso tramite avvisi esposti all’interno dei locali del ristorante ed eventualmente tramite SMS o MAIL, previa autorizzazione degli stessi partecipanti.

NOMINA DEI VINCITORI
La commissione si riunirà e valuterà i bozzetti pervenuti giungendo alla scelta dei dipinti e dei nove artisti vincitori del concorso. Questi verranno convocati, a tempo debito, per la conferenza stampa e la premiazione. A partire da una settimana dopo il giorno della premiazione avranno inizio i lavori per la realizzazione dell’opera che dovranno concludersi entro 3 settimane.

On 08th October 2011 Youth Community Training Centre (YCTC) celebrated the open day in the second school period in 2011. The celebration was held in the main hall at YCTC and was done in two main themes namely, open day and graduation ceremony for the Tailoring former students who were sponsored by The Rotary Club of Livingstone.

17 students graduated and got their Certificates and sewing machines from the President of The Rotary Club of Livingstone Anthony Ranjan. They have been given the sewing machines so that they will make use of them and benefit for their livelihood.

The students from Catering, Bricklaying, Tailoring, Computer, Carpentry, Plumbing and all the staff were gathered at YCTC in order to witness the graduation ceremony as well as the open day for the parents and guardians of the students. In this very day the parents have the opportunity to see the activities of the school.

The celebration started at 08.00 a.m. and lasted up to 12.30 p.m. Once the visitors gathered in the hall they were warmly welcomed by the choir group, that sang a song about YCTC. After speeches, group of students entertained the visitors with some nice songs and a very funny drama. Immediately after the speech from the guest of honour (Fr. Clifford), Mr Ranjan and Sr. Pepetua awarded the certificates and sewing machines to former tailoring students, and Mr Chokani (the administrator of YCTC) invited everybody to fill in the questioners. The questioners were to be filled in by the former students of YCTC, the potential beneficiaries of the Centre, and the employers who employ the former students from YCTC.

The most excited moment that the visitors enjoyed was the tour of the classes. The first place they got in was catering class: the students had prepared various foods which they exhibited to the visitors and explained them how they prepare and arrange the table in an Hotel. In the tailoring class, the students displayed the items which they had sewed. In the Computer Class the students showed to the visitors their typing skills and other packages that they learned. In the carpentry class the students displayed coffee tables, stools, and folding chairs. Finally, in the Plumbing Class the parents witnessed how the students make dust pans and joining of water pipe; they also displayed buckets made of sheet metal.

I’m sure the parents and guardians did enjoy the two hours touring of the school. Looking forward for the 2012 Open Day!

L’8 Ottobre 2011 il YCTC ha celebrato il suo secondo Open Day. La cerimonia si è svolta nella Hall del centro e ha riguardato due momenti principali: la presentazione della scuola ai genitori degli studenti e ai visitatori, e la cerimonia di diploma delle ex-studentesse del corso di sartoria, sponsorizzate dal Rotary Club di Livingstone.

Gli studenti dei corsi di Catering, Edilizia, Sartoria, Computer, Falegnameria, Idraulica e tutti i membri dello staff si sono riuniti per assistere alla cerimonia di diploma e per festeggiare con i propri genitori la giornata di “scuola aperta”. Questa infatti è un’ottima occasione per i genitori per vedere come si svolgono le attività scolastiche del centro frequentato dai loro ragazzi.

La cerimonia è iniziata alle 8 e si è conclusa verso le 12.30. Una volta che i visitatori si sono riuniti nella Hall, sono stai caldamente accolti dal coro, che hanno cantato una canzone sul YCTC. Dopo alcune presentazioni ed alcuni discorsi di ringraziamento, due gruppi i studenti hanno intrattenuto i visitatori con alcune belle canzoni e una recita molto divertente. Subito dopo il discorso dell’ospite d’onore (Padre Clifford), Mr Ranjan e Suor Perpetua hanno consegnato i diplomi e le macchine da cucire alle studentesse. Dopodiché, Mr Chokani (l’amministratore del YCTC) ha invitato tutti i presenti a compilare alcuni questionari per contribuire ad un’indagine che il YCTC sta svolgendo.

Il momento più interessante della giornata è stata la visita delle classi del centro da parte dei genitori e degli ospiti. Nella classe del corso di catering gli studenti avevano preparato diversi cibi che potevano essere gustati dai visitatori; inoltre gli studenti davano dimostrazione di come è possibile imbandire una tavola in un hotel. Nella classe del corso di sartoria le studentesse avevano preparato un’esposizione di prodotti cuciti da loro: tende, lenzuola, tovagliette. Gli studenti del corso di computer hanno dimostrato le loro competenze nell’uso dei diversi programmi del pacchetto Office. Nella classe di falegnameria gli studenti hanno esposto tavolini, sgabelli e sedie pieghevoli realizzati da loro. Infine, nella classe del corso di idraulica i visitatori hanno assistito alla lavorazione di lastre di metallo e tubi e hanno ammirato alcuni prodotti realizzati dagli studenti.

Certamente i genitori e i visitatori si sono molto divertiti durante tutta la giornata al YCTC.

Calm. Silence. From our place, few meters from Maramba Compound (one of the most crowded and noisy Livingstone compound) and nearby Mosi-O-Tunia road, the main road in town, it seems just impossible. During the past weeks it was possible to hear people singing, shouting and claiming for their favourite candidate. Each and every party had its own supporters, that used to spend the all day crossing the streets of Livingstone on cars, trucks or buses that played hymns out loud. Both the supporters and the ways of transport were decorated by chitenges, flags and stickers of their favourite condidate’s colour: sky blue for MMD (leading party), green for PF, red for HH (tonga candidate, with a lot of supporters in Livingstone, tonga town). There hasn’t been any moment, during the day and during the night, without supporters singing and shouting a motto. Today is the day. All the schools and the shops are closed. In town selling Chibuko (local beer made of mealy) and Ghiri-ghiri (plastic envelops filled with alcohol) is forbidden. Everybody is queuing in order to vote or at home; no reason to go around in town, so: silence!

A lot of citizens were involved in the campaign. In fact, quite often it had been difficult to find employees at their work place, and sometimes we had to put off purchasing or meetings (for example with the contractor of Olga’s Guest House) because the summons disappeared…than, unexpectedly, we found them in town, dressed in the colours of their candidate, dancing and singing with other supporters. There have been a lot of political meetings (rally) and all the candidates came at least twice to Livingstone to promote their candidature. And the rally have always been very participated, thousands of people came maybe because of their interest for the candidate, maybe because of their desire for the presents that during those meetings were given. In fact, mostly in Lusaka, but also here in Livingstone, a lot of presents were given: beer, mealies meal, chitenge. Everything was done in a peaceful way.

Also at Olga’s the guys were very excited: they have been talking a lot about politics but, like everywhere else, smiling and laughing! Not even one violent episode has been registered. As far as we can understand, there is a strong willing to change and the youths aged between 20 and 25 will go for PF supporting Michael Sata, the ladies will vote for Rupiah Banda (MMD) and the men, especially tonga, will go for HH. The government officers and employees that are close to the present government, don’t have any doubt: they will vote for the actual president. Today is the day...

We got to know many of the international observers that came in town to assist with the election (they have always had lunch and dinner at Olga’s in the previous weeks). They seem to be quite about the correctness of the counting of the votes. They don’t foresee any problem regarding the public safety. As all the Zambians kept telling us: “this is a Christian country, violence can’t take place”...we believe it and we hope that whoever will be in charge as new president for the next 5 years, will do something very good for this country!!

...few clashes in the Copperbelt area (predictable as the area will really be influenced by the results) and a bit of tension in Lusaka...but always a lot of calm and peacefulness in Livingstone. People are waiting, anxiously but quietly. Olga’s gates are opened and everybody is as usual at his workplace! Tiza o nana! (= see you!)

Zambian election results are out, after two waiting days: Mr Sata (PF, the opposition party) has won the presidential. Yesterday two men died in the Copperbelt area during the few clashes due to the too long waiting, but here we are quiet. We haven’t been able to sleep the all night! At 00:45 the results have been announced and the celebration started in Linda Compound and spread to the others compound and to town where they lasted up to the following morning...we are sleepy!!! Here in Livingstone the celebration is going on peacefully. It seems as if Zambia won the Football World Cup: horns, music and dancing. No safety alert in the country. Everything is ok. Mr Sata, now it’s your turn!

Calma. Silenzio. Dal nostro plot a poche centinaia di metri dal Maramba Compound (uno dei più chiassosi, data la presenza del più grande mercato di Livingstone, e trafficati quartieri della città) e ad altrettanti metri dalla Mosi-o-Tunia, la via principale del centro, ci sembra impossibile. Le settimane appena passate sono state un crescere di musiche, canti, chiassosa e colorata propaganda politica. Ogni partito aveva i suoi sostenitori che passavano l’intera giornata ad attraversare le vie della città su macchine, camion o pullman assettati con un numero spropositato di megafoni e casse che suonavano i vari inni dei partiti a tutto volume. Sia i sostenitori che i mezzi erano completamente addobbati da chitenge, bandiere e adesivi riportanti i loro politici preferiti ed i colori del partito: azzurro MMD (partito uscente e maggior candidato alla vittoria secondo gli osservatori stranieri…forse perché a speso molti più soldi durante la campagna elettorale), verde PF (partito che se la sta giocando fino all’ultimo) e rosso per HH (il candidato tonga ha un seguito piuttosto numeroso in questa regione prevalentemente costituita da tribu tonga per l’appunto). Non c’è stato un momento della giornata, negli ultimi giorni anche durante la notte, che non si sentissero slogan politici o gente urlante a squarciagola qualche motto. Oggi è il grande giorno, le scuole e tutte le attività commerciali sono chiuse. E’ vietata la vendita di Chibuko (la birra locale fatta con il mais) e Ghiri-ghiri (delle bustine di plastica contenenti alcool di dubbia fattura vendute a prezzi troppo bassi per non essere pericolosissimi alla salute, 500KZM a confezione, circa 0,10 €). Tutti sono in coda per votare o a casa, non c’è motivo per girare per la città, quindi: silenzio!

Molti cittadini sono stati coinvolti dalla campagna elettorale tanto che spesso non si riuscivano mai a trovare alcune persone al loro abituale posto di lavoro e, in alcuni casi, abbiamo addirittura dovuto rinviare alcuni acquisti o meeting (con ad esempio il costruttore della nuova Guest House di Olga’s) perché i partecipanti si erano dati misteriosamente alla macchia…poi, tutto di un tratto li si ritrovava in giro per la città vestiti da testa ai piedi con i colori e le facce dei loro candidati preferiti dei quali stavano appoggiando la candidatura. Ci sono stati diversi comizi e tutti i maggiori candidati sono passati da Livingstone almeno un paio di volte. La presenza di pubblico è sempre stata maestosa, migliaia di persone forse interessate veramente a quello che il candidato aveva da dire ma molto più probabilmente attratte dalla possibilità che durante questi rally potessero ricevere in regalo qualcosa. Usanza molto diffusa oltre che a Lusaka (con regali molto costosi) anche qui e soprattutto nei compound e i villaggi dove sono state regalati centinaia di litri di birra e diverse tonnellate di mealies meal (la farina per fare la polenta locale, indispensabile nella cultura culinaria zambiana). Tutto si è comunque svolto pacificamente.

Anche ad Olga’s i ragazzi sono stati molto eccitati, hanno dimostrato diverse preferenze ma come è successo nel resto della città (nessun episodio di violenza registrato) ne hanno solamente parlato animatamente ma sempre con il sorriso sulla bocca. Ognuno avanzava le sue motivazioni ma sempre nel massimo rispetto degli altri. Da quello che ho potuto capire c’è grande voglia di cambiamento e i ragazzi della loro età, 20-25 circa, appoggiano il partito di Michel Sata (PF), le donne madri di famiglia sostengono ancora l’MMD di Rupiah Banda e gli uomini, soprattutto tonga, vedono solo per HH. I dipendenti comunali e le persone molto vicine all’attuale governo, invece, non hanno dubbi ed ovviamente scelta e continuano ad appoggiare il presidente uscente. Oggi è il gran giorno…abbiamo conosciuto gli osservatori dell’Unione Europea venuti in città per le elezioni (hanno pranzato e cenato sempre da Olga’s quando erano in città in queste settimane) e ci sono sembrati molto tranquilli sulla correttezza dello spoglio e dei conteggi. Non prevedono particolari problemi di ordine pubblico e come ci viene ripetuto in continuazione dagli zambiani: “Siamo un paese cristiano, nessuna violenza ci potrà mai essere”…ci crediamo e speriamo che chiunque avrà la carica di presidente dello Zambia per i prossimi 5 anni possa veramente fare qualcosa di buono in questo paese!!

...piccoli scontri nel Copperbelt (prevedibili essendo un'area molto interessata dal risultato di queste presidenziali) e tanta tensione a Lusaka...ma sempre moltissima calma e tranquillità a Livingstone. La gente aspetta, ansiosa ma composta. I cancelli di Olga's - The Italian Corner sono aperti e si lavora come sempre! Tiza o nana! (=a presto)

…i risultati delle elezioni in Zambia, dopo due giorni di attesa, sono usciti: Mr.Sata (PF,l’opposizione) ha vinto le presidenziali. Ieri un po’ di scontri nel nord dello Zambia (purtroppo due morti nel Copperbelt) per la troppa attesa ma qui sempre tranquilli. Non abbiamo dormito molto questa notte. Alle 00:45 hanno annunciato i risultati e da Linda compound sono iniziati i festeggiamenti che si sono presto allargati anche in Maramba compound e in tutti gli altri compuond prima di trasferirsi in Town dove è continuata fino al mattino …ho sonno!!! Qui si festeggia nelle strade pacificamente. Sembra che lo Zambia abbia vinto i mondiali di calcio: clacson, musica e balli. Nessun avviso di problemi nel paese. Tutto OK. Mr. Sata adesso tocca a te!

They come from Mongu, Lusaka, Monze, Siavonga, Mazabuka, Livingstone...they’re Italian but Zambian by adoption, they are CeLIM volunteers. Some of them have been living in Zambia for many years, some only for few months and some indeed have just came back!

They met in Livingstone on Thursday and Friday, hosted by Olga’s and YCTC, in order to carry on meetings on projects development and on new ideas for the future. Between formal meetings and informal chattings, and they had also time for leisure. They played football with YCTC children, went on boat cruise on Zambezi River...and they ate a lot of PIZZA!

Arrivano da Mongu, Lusaka, Monze, Siavonga, Mazabuka, Livingstone...italiani, ma zambiani d’adozione, ecco i volontari CeLIM. Puoi chiamarli Cooperanti, Servizi Civili, Espatriati...c’è chi è di casa in Zambia da diversi anni, chi solo da pochi mesi, chi invece ci torna dopo tanto tempo.

Giovedì e Venerdì si sono incontrati a Livingstone, ospitati da Olga’s e dal YCTC, per discutere dell’andamento dei progetti e di nuove prospettive per il futuro. Tra riunioni formali e colloqui informali, si è trovato il tempo per un po’ si svago: partita a calcetto con i bambini del YCTC, gita in barca tra gli elefanti del fiume Zambesi, e ovviamente tantissima PIZZA!

DAY OF THE AFRICAN CHILD (2011.06.18)

In 1976, thousands of black school children took to the streets of Soweto, South Africa. In a march more than half a mile long, they protested the inferior quality of their education and demanded their right to be taught in their own language. Hundreds of young boys and girls were shot down by security forces. To honor the memory of those killed and the courage of all those who marched, the Day of the African Child has been celebrated on 16 June every year since 1991, when it was first initiated by the African Union. The Day also draws attention to the lives of African children today; this year, the Day focuses on the plight of the estimated 30 million "street children" across the continent.

18th June 2011 – As usual, YCTC celebrates the Day of the African Child welcoming more than 100 Livingstone children, coming from Linda, Maramba and Libuyu compounds, for an entertainment afternoon. All the children were divided in three teams: yellow “KUDU” team, composed by YCTC children; blue “IMPALA” team, composed by Libuyu Community School children; and red “SABO” team, composed by Lubasi Home and Lushomo children. The children, from 7 to 15 years old, challenged themselves with different and funny games: flat race, spoons race, obstacle race, bottle race, relay, skip in race, sack race. At the end of the friendly competition, these were the scores: “IMPALA” 135 points, “KUDU” 151 points, “SABO” 252 points!

Nel 1976, migliaia di bambini neri scesero per le strade di Soweto, Sudafrica. In una marcia lunga più di mezzo miglio, protestarono per la scarsa qualità dell’istruzione che stavano ricevendo e domandarono il diritto affiché fossero educati nella loro lingua madre. Centinaia di giovani scolari furono uccisi dalle forze di polizia. Per onorare la memoria di coloro che furono uccisi e il coraggio di coloro che marciarono, il Day of the African Child viene celebrato il 16 giugno di ogni anno, dal 1991. Questa celebrazione ha anche lo scopo di portare l’attenzione sulle condizioni di vita dei bambini africani oggigiorno; quest’anno, la giornata si focalizza sulla piaga dei quasi 30 milioni di “bambini di strada” presenti in tutto il continente africano.

18 Giugno 2011 – Come consuetudine, il YCTC celebra il Day of the African Child ospitando più di 100 bambini di Livingstone, provenienti dai quartieri di Linda, Maramba e Libuyu, per un pomeriggio di gioco. I bambini sono stati suddivisi in tre squadre: squadra gialla “KUDU”, composta dai bambini del YCTC; squadra blu “IMPALA”, composta dai bambini della Libuyu Community School; e squadra rossa “SABO”, formata dai bambini di Lubasi Home e Lushomo. I bambini, dai 7 ai 15 anni, si sono sfidati in numerosi e divertentissimi giochi: corsa, gara dei cucchiai, corsa ad ostacoli, gara delle bottiglie, staffetta, corsa dei sacchi. Alla fine della competizione amichevole, questi erano i punteggi: “IMPALA” 135 punti, “KUDU” 151 punti, “SABO” 252 punti!

Olga's is growing!
Thank you for your support, two years after its inauguration, Olga's has become one of the landmarks of Livingstone and its waiters, chefs and pizza chefs, with their enthusiasm and the teachings of Giuseppe, an Italian CeLIM volunteer, will soon be able to manage by themselves.

On the success achieved by Olga's Project, CeLIM and Politecnico di Milano are starting to build a guest house in front of the restaurant, thanks to the Diappi Family donation, Olga’s friends supports and Cariplo Foundation funds.

In fact, the Cariplo Foundation has selected our project, among the hundreds of proposals that were submitted, entitled: LEARNING BY DOING: SELF-FINANCIALY AND VOCATIONAL GROWTH IN A TRAINING CENTER WITH THE CREATION OF AN ACCOMMODATION IN LIVINGSTONE ". This money will help us to cover part of the necessary cost of the construction of the rooms and the YCTC students training in hotel management and construction techniques.

The project intend realize in over two years:

- create a structure (a complex of about 9 rooms) in order to ensure the economic scheme of YCTC;

- to train YCTC students in innovative and environmentally sustainable construction techniques;

- to train YCTC students in hotel management and catering;

- promoting responsible tourism and foster solidarity and replicability of the model of small accommodation facilities;

In April 2011 the first assessment mission has already made to identify the company that will implement the construction of chambers and a contract was signed: the work will begin soon!

The project is simple (to keep costs down), but very nice. Involves the construction of nine rooms with private bathroom and veranda, a high thatched roof as in the dining room of the restaurant, with an excellent ventilation system and local materials and skills designed by professors of architecture of the Politecnico di Milano. The doors, windows, furniture and fabrics of the rooms will be made by students instead of school.

There is still much more to tell but we await the start of work!

Olga’s sta crescendo !
Grazie anche al vostro sostegno, a due anni dalla sua inaugurazione, Olga’s è diventato uno dei punti di riferimento di Livingstone e i suoi camerieri, chef e pizzaioli, con il loro entusiasmo e gli insegnamenti di Giuseppe, volontario CeLIM, saranno presto in grado di gestirlo in autonomia.
Sulla base del successo raggiunto da Olga’s e per permettere, in futuro, ad un numero sempre più crescente di giovani in difficoltà di accedere ai corsi professionali gratuiti del YCTC, CeLIM e Politecnico di Milano stanno avviando la costruzione di una Guest House nel comprensorio di Olga's, grazie al sostegno delle donazioni della famiglia Diappi, degli amici di Olga’s e i fondi della Fondazione Cariplo.
Infatti , la Fondazione Cariplo ha selezionato il nostro progetto, intitolato: LEARNING BY DOING: AUTOFINANZIAMENTO E CRESCITA PROFESSIONALE IN UN CENTRO FORMATIVO CON LA CREAZIONE DI UNA STRUTTURA RICETTIVA A LIVINGSTONE” tra le centinaia di proposte sottoposte e contribuirà a coprire parte dei costi necessari per la costruzione delle stanze e la formazione degli studenti del YCTC in tecniche costruttive e hotel management.
Il progetto si propone nell’arco di due anni di :
-          Creare una struttura ricettiva (un complesso di circa 9 stanze) non profit all’interno di Olga’s con lo scopo, a regime di garantire la sostenibilità economica del YCTC (linka pagina YCTC sul sito olga’s);
-          Formare gli studenti del YCTC in tecniche costruttive innovative e eco sostenibili;
-          Formare gli studenti del YCTC in hotel management e catering;
-          Promuovere turismo responsabile e solidale e favorire la replicabilità del modello di piccole strutture ricettive;
Ad Aprile 2011 è già avvenuta la prima missione di valutazione per identificare l’impresa che realizzerà la costruzione delle camere ed è stato firmato un contratto: presto cominceranno i lavori!
Il progetto è semplice (per contenere i costi), ma molto bello. Prevede la costruzione di 9 stanze con bagno privato e veranda, un alto tetto di paglia (tauched roof) come nella sala da pranzo del ristorante, con un ottimo sistema di areazione studiato da docenti di Architettura del Politecnico di Milano utilizzando materiali e competenze locali. Le porte, le finestre, la mobilia e i tessuti delle stanze saranno invece realizzati dagli allievi della scuola.
C’è ancora tanto altro da raccontare ma aspettiamo l’inizio dei lavori!

YCTC CATERING FINAL EXAMS (06/07-05-11)

Last week the final exams for the catering course were conducted at YCTC. The 24 students who begun the one year course on June 2010, went through theoretical and practical exams. On Friday and Saturday morning, divided in 12 groups, the students prepared the practical test: arranging a meal composed of two courses for two customers, taking care of both the quality and preparation of the food, and the arranging of the table and hospitality. “Dancing Monkey”, “Farfalle Tuna and Olives”, “Nshima with Green Beans”, “Bruschetta”, “Chicken Wings”, “Tortillas”, “Fried Brim” ...only some of the dishes that the customers/examiners tasted during the exam. At the end of the meal, every customer was invited to give his or her opinions and evaluations. Satisfied and full, the examiners thanked the students and the teachers, Mrs. Nawa and Mrs. Nyirenda, congratulating everybody on the great job. Among the students there were also Yvonne and Regan that, after finishing the three months attachment, are continuing their collaboration with Olga’s. Waiting for the exams results, we wish all the students good luck, surely they will find a good job in catering, thanks to the knowledge and the experiences acquired at YCTC!
Meanwhile new students are in class, ready to learn and practice...

La scorsa settimana si sono svolti gli esami finali del corso di catering al YCTC. I 24 studenti che hanno frequentato il corso annuale iniziato a giugno 2010, hanno sostenuto esami teorici e pratici. Nelle mattine di venerdì e sabato, divisi in 12 squadre, gli studenti hanno preparato la prova pratica: organizzare un pasto composto da due portate per altrettanti ospiti, curando sia qualità e presentazione del cibo, che sistemazione del tavolo ed accoglienza clienti. “Dancing Monkey”, “Farfalle Tune and Olives”, “Nshima and green Beans”, “Bruschetta”, “Chicken Wings”, “Tortillas”, “Fried Brim” ...sono solo alcuni dei piatti che i clienti/esaminatori hanno potuto gustare. Al termine del pasto ogni cliente è stato invitato a fornire le proprie opinioni e valutazioni. Soddisfatti e sazi, gli esaminatori hanno ringraziato i ragazzi e le insegnanti, Mrs. Nawa e Mrs. Nyirenda, congratulandosi con tutti per l’ottimo lavoro. Tra gli studenti c’erano anche Yvonne e Regan che, dopo lo stage di tre mesi previsto dal corso, hanno proseguito la loro collaborazione ad Olga’s. In attesa di conoscere i risultati degli esami, auguriamo buona fortuna a tutti gli studenti, certi che tutti sapranno trovare la propria strada grazie alle conoscenze e alle esperienze acquisite.
E intanto da domani nuovi studenti saranno in classe, pronti ad imparare e a sperimentare...

Olgas’s is pleased and excited at the addition of two new members to our group! At the beginning of March the Italian civil servant volunteers Elena Colombo and Richard Sonsino arrived in Livingstone and they will stay with us for a year. Richard, graduate in Architecture, will help Olga’s management, dealing with the project’s in communication and maintenance. While Elena, a graduate in Psychology is going to work mainly at the Youth Community Training Centre supporting the school’s administration and also keeping the link between Olga’s and YCTC. There is another new surprise for all the Olga’s friends but you will find more information about it in the next week post. Keep in touch with us!

Tutta Olga's è contenta ed eccitata per l'aggiunta di due nuovi membri al nostro gruppo! All'inizio di marzo i servizio civilisti Elena Colombo e Richard Sonsino sono arrivati a Livingstone e rimarranno con noi per un anno. Richard, laureato in architettura, aiuterà nella gestione di Olga's, in tutto quello che riguarda la comunicazione (sul web e sulla carta stampata) e nella manutenzione dei locali esistenti mentre Elena, laureata in Psicologia lavorerà principalmente presso lo Youth Community Training Centre a sostegno dell'amministrazione della scuola e per mantenere stretto il legame tra Olga e YCTC. World Cup Spaghetti

Ignoring the event that's "Taking over" South Africa would be irreverent, so we at Olga's have made arrangements so that our guests can follow the Football World Cup. We have therefore set up a confortable TV corner where fans can support their team but we have also concocted a special dish fit for the occasion. This dish is a fusion of flavours from the world's northern and southern hemisphere: the unmistakable taste of San Marzano tomatoes, the flavour of olive oil, the aroma of oregano combine with the exotic delicacy of crocodile meat cooked in South African wine into a sauce for traditional italian spaghetti. A taste from around the world!

We had laid the first stone of what is to become Graziella's garden, the new arrangement of the area in front of the restaurant which at the moment is not in use.

This is a small contribution to Olga's project promoted by a group of friends of Graziella, Tiziana' sister (Tiziana being currently in Livingston for this reason) who died a year ago. The garden will feature some areas paved with local stones with picnic tables of different size.
Here costumers will be able to surf the Net using the existing wi-fi connection while enjoying a pizza or a tiramisù in the shade of the mango trees. There will also be some playground equipment for children: a sand pit, a swing and a see-saw. And naturally a great variety of colourful flowers. There is not better way to commemorate Graziella, a passionate gardener who dedicated many years of her life to working as a psychologist with disabled children.

The 26^th of September Zambia Celim Crew met in Lusaka for the Celim Meeting. It was a good moment to share the different experiences about the various projects in Zambia and it was the moment to thank Michela, Lucia and Gabriel because they are about to conclude their work experience in Zambia.

All Olga’s Team thank Gabriel for the extraordinary time he spent at Olga’s and wish him a safe journey to Brazil…. Grazie!!!

Sharon and Anaiawa YCTC students in Catering

As soon as the school holidays of the Catering Course of the YCTC started the students Sharon and Anaiawa joined our kitchen staff for a 1 month work experience.

Both were recommended by their lectures as being the best students of the term and therefore were given the chance of applying everything they learned at the course in a real and busy restaurant of Livingstone: Olga’s Italian Corner. The idea worked out so nicely that Olga’s will keep welcoming more students that are on the holiday period to join our kitchen. This is exactly how Olga’s and the YCTC work together, combining theory and practice in one big Project!

The lessons will be back this Monday the 7^th of September and also Sharon and Anaiawa will leave us to keep the focus on the studies! Thanks girls for the support and keep studying!

Olgas’s is pleased and excited at the addition of two new members to our crew! On the beginning of May the Brazilian volunteer Gabriel Govoni left the CeLIM’s headquarter in Lusaka and joined us for a period of 6 months. He is taking an active role in managing Olga’s side by side to the already well know manager Giuseppe. Also recently the half Italian-half German CeLIM volunteer Jonas Schuten arrived in Livingstone to complete his 3 months internship. Jonas is going to work mainly at the Youth Community Training Centre supporting the local educators and also keeping the link between Olga’s and YCTC alive!
